Inside Line Promotions – MILTON, Fla. (May 19, 2020) – Jordon Mallett highlighted a USCS Series doubleheader in Florida last weekend by capturing his first top-10 result of the season.
Friday’s performance at Southern Raceway came after a two-month hiatus from the track because of multiple cancellations due to the effects of COVID-19.
“It was definitely a weekend where we had to dig into the old notebook as it’s been a while since we raced out in Florida,” he said. “These are new Triple X cars and we are still learning so this was pretty much about getting back behind the wheel and feeling things out.”
Friday night began with Mallett starting fourth in a heat race. He advanced one spot to finish third. That forced the team to run a B Main, in which Mallett placed second to earn a transfer into the main event.
“I didn’t feel like we had a B Main car and it was a little disappointing to end up there,” he said. “But those are the cards we were dealt and we made the best of it to get into the feature.”
Mallett started 18th in the main event and maneuvered around the tough race track, passing eight cars to finish 10th. Along with being his first top 10 of the season, Mallett also garnered the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
“I feel bad that we had to come out of the B Main because the car was obviously really good,” he said. “The track was really tough to pass on, but our car was so good as we could build momentum under long runs. We had to work for it, but I was really proud with the finish.”
Saturday night started off with heartbreak as Mallett charged forward in his heat race, powering from seventh to the lead in a handful of laps only to break while running away to the win. He was credited with finishing eighth.
“We took what we learned Friday and made a few small changes and boy did we come out fast,” he said. “We shot to the front and we had them covered and unfortunately we had troubles.”
Fearing engine damage, Mallett was pleasantly surprised to find out he only broke a rocker arm. His team got the car repaired and sent him out for the B Main in the 13th starting spot. Showing he still had an extremely fast race car, Mallett charged forward to the seventh spot in only a handful of laps before two cars in front of him got together, causing nose wing damage and a flat tire.
His team once again persevered to get the car back together in time to rejoin the field. Throughout the remaining laps Mallett charged forward to finish sixth, two spots shy of qualifying for the feature.
While the result was not what he expected after a long night full of adversity, Mallett said he is extremely proud of his crew for their ability to overcome obstacles and narrowly miss out of qualifying for the feature.
“When you’re that fast and you don’t have much to show for it in terms of results it can be a tough pill to swallow,” he said. “But my guys were prepared and all night they kept giving me chances to still be successful. I can’t tell you how proud that makes me feel and it’s definitely something we can hang our hats on.”
Mallett is looking forward to returning to the track soon, but with inclement weather on the horizon and many tracks still shut down due to COVID-19 he is unsure of his next race.
