Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (March 11, 2020) – Alex Hill captured a top-10 finish against a stout field featuring more than 50 drivers during her California racing debut last Friday night at Merced Speedway.
“I’m glad we finally got to race in California and it was even better that we did well against a lot of good competition,” said Hill, who was one of two drivers – along with teammate Dylan Westbrook – to qualify for the A Main without running a B Main in both nights of Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition in the state.
Hill’s racing weekend got off to a good start when she lined up on the pole of her heat race on Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced.
“It was nice to get a good draw this time,” she said. “The guy who started beside me got a bit of a jump on me and beat me to the first turn. But I was able to stay with him the entire race. There were a couple of good cars right behind me, but they didn’t really challenge and we finished second. That gave us a good starting position in the qualifier.”
Hill rolled off fourth in her qualifier.
“I had a better start in the qualifier and was able to eventually pass for third and that was where I finished,” she said.
The result slotted her in the 10th starting spot in the night’s main event.
“I ran the top of the track at first until I got passed by a guy on the bottom,” she said. “Then I moved down there. I moved up to about eighth or ninth at one point and then dropped back a bit to 11th. I was able to pass D.J. Netto near the end to finish 10th. We had a fast car and it was fun to be able to race with some good drivers.”
With Placerville Speedway in Placerville canceled on Saturday due to rain, Hill returned to action on Sunday at Petaluma Speedway. She started and finished fourth in her heat race before lining up sixth in her qualifier.
“I had a good start in the qualifier,” she said. “I passed Robbie Price for fourth, but then he got me back and I finished fifth.”
Her heat race and qualifier results secured the 16th and final lock-in position into the A Main.
“The A Main didn’t go quite as well,” she said. “It was pretty much one lane around the bottom. I had a good car, but I lost a few spots because I was spinning my tires on the straightaway. That was my fault and something I need to work on. I finished 22nd.”
Hill will take this weekend off from racing before her next competition on March 20-21 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, during the 47th annual Spring Nationals with the ASCS National Tour.
