Mallett Continues Rookie Learning Experience at Dirt Cup

Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 25, 2019) – Jordon Mallett was hoping for similar results to his top-10 outing the previous weekend in South Dakota when he entered the 48th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway last weekend.

Unfortunately, his first visit to the Northwest got off to a rocky start last Thursday as he started seventh in his heat race and advanced to sixth, placing him in the eighth starting position for his qualifier. He was running well before getting caught up in a five-car pileup, which resulted in a DNF. The Arkansas native started 10th in a B Main and advanced to fifth, but that was two positions shy of transferring into the main event.

“I just was in the wrong place at the wrong time in the qualifier and it put us deep in the B Main,” he said. “I did my best, but ultimately we were just too far back to make any serious moves forward.”

Night 2 looked to be a better scenario for the young driver as he started first in his heat race. Inexperience caught him though as he began searching around for a line of his liking and fell back to sixth. He advanced two positions in a qualifier to finish eighth and once again placed fifth in a B Main.

“I lucked out with a front row starting spot in the heat and after about four laps I started searching around,” he said. “Ultimately that was the wrong position and I set us back for the rest of the night.”

After two nights of racing, Mallet sat 33rd in the event standings, which lined him up eighth for one of the two B Mains. He quickly moved into the top five and made a late-race bid for a transfer position, but contact on the final lap turned him around.

“When you put yourself that far back, you really set yourself up for a tough night,” he said. “I was just kind of minding my own out there and hoping to capitalize on some guys maybe making a few mistakes. Ultimately it just wasn’t our weekend.”

Continuing a trend of first-time visits, Mallett will make his maiden voyage to Elma, Wash., for two-nights of racing this Friday and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway during the Fred Brownfield Classic with the ASCS National Tour.

“I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a picture of the speedway, let alone have I ever raced there,” he said. “We’ll go in with a clear mind and look to be better than last week and hopefully have a few solid runs up front.”
