Inside Line Promotions – ELDON, Mo. (Sept. 3, 2018) – Sammy Swindell was dominant throughout the 9th annual LOS 360 Sprint Car Nationals last weekend at Lake Ozark Speedway.
Swindell and car owner A.G. Rains swept the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com doubleheader and did so in emphatic fashion, leading 60 of the 66 combined feature laps. Swindell is now tied atop the ASCS National Tour victory list with five triumphs this season.
“It all went really good,” he said. “We did a few things the week prior to that and I think that helped a lot, just a lot of the stuff we’ve been doing has carried over throughout the whole year. When you have things working for you you can always work on the little details to improve. It just keeps getting a bit better. We worked on some fuel stuff last week leading up to that and was able to make some gains with the motor so that helped. The car has been pretty good all year. We just keep doing little things that makes it better and it all adds up.”
The event began on Saturday with Swindell starting sixth in a heat race.
“The draw wasn’t the greatest, but that’s something we don’t have any control over,” he said. “They roll that number and there it is. We were fortunate enough to have a heat race that didn’t have a lot of the best cars in it. I was able to move forward pretty easy. Since I’ve never ran the 360 there we were off on a few things. We made some adjustments for the qualifier and it was right on. I was able to get to the front right away and pull away.”
Swindell advanced from sixth to third place in a heat race before winning a qualifier from the pole. That ranked him second in overall points out of more than 50 competitors, which lined Swindell up on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap A Main.
“The top was pretty good in turns one and two so I thought the other end would be pretty good,” he said. “When I went up there it was like there wasn’t grip and I had to get out of the throttle. Instead of leading I was third. It didn’t take long to get right back up there. We had plenty of laps to go so I was sizing up the guys ahead of me and found out where I needed to run and how much faster I was. It all fell into place right away.”
Swindell officially took the lead on Lap 7 and cruised to the triumph, winning by approximately half a lap. That locked him into the feature redraw for Sunday’s $10,000-to-win main event. He pulled the No. 4 to start the 41-lap feature on the outside of the second row.
“We had such a big advantage on Saturday that we were pretty confident we didn’t have to do a whole lot with the race car, just match it up with the track if it was a bit different,” he said. “We did a couple of little adjustments once we got out there on the frontstretch and went to run it like the night before and it was just as good.
“You could run the bottom or the top; pretty much most of the race track you could run on. There were times traffic was three wide and you’d get held up. When you get slowed to their speed it’s hard to pick it up sometimes, but most of them I could drive around them or go through the middle.”
Swindell led the distance of the race and lapped up to 11th place when a caution came out just after the midpoint of the feature. He continued to pace the field for the remainder of the race en route to his eighth triumph of the year.
Next up, Swindell will return to the Thone Motorsports sprint car this Friday at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wis., for the Northern Nationals and Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., for the Jerry Richert Memorial with the IRA Sprint Car Series.
