Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (May 28, 2018) – Channin Tankersley overcame a pair of high pill draws to earn strong finishes last weekend during an ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader.
Tankersley maneuvered the Bruce Griffith owned sprint car from seventh to third place during a heat race on Friday at RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas. That earned enough points to make the feature redraw. Tankersley pulled the No. 4 to start the A Main on the outside of the second row.
“We were really fast all night and in contention for the win most of the race,” he said. “I was running third and me and Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) were racing side by side most of the race. He’d go to the top and I’d go to the bottom. Then we’d change lanes. While we were doing that we were making up ground on Terry Gray. Any one of the three of us could have won. I started having a mechanical problem toward the end of the race. We had a caution at the end and we couldn’t get going like we needed and a car got around us.”
Tankersley posted a fourth-place finish, which marked his second straight top five.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, where once again Tankersley started at the back of a heat race. He maneuvered from eighth to sixth place, but needed one more position to make the feature redraw.
“That gremlin we ran into Friday night kept getting worse,” he said. “Our engine would run once you got going, but as soon as you went to bog the motor down to run the bottom it’d lose all the RPMs. We changed a bunch of stuff. We were behind the eight ball all night. We salvaged an okay finish.”
Tankersley started the A Main on the outside of the fifth row and he picked up a pair of positions to finish eighth. He ranks second in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings, but is only one point out of the lead.
Tankersley is scheduled to be off for the next month before resuming competition on June 30 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
