Covington Caps off Rough Stretch with a 9th Place at I-30

CG Motorsports. Glenpool, Ok. (May 16th, 2018) Matt Covington rebounded from a rough couple of weeks on the road with a top-10, coming home 9th at I-30 Speedway with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this past Saturday.

“Going into last weekend at Little Rock I was pretty discouraged,” stated Matt. “We’ve been one of the fastest cars all year. But, besides the win, we have been bitten by horrible luck and circumstances, especially while running up front.”

Covington’s bad luck continued in Williams Grove when passing for the lead in the heat and got stuffed in the fence. That started him way back in the B feature, ruining his night points wise. He was unable to make a transfer and had to take a provisional into the feature. The next night at Selinsgrove, Matt was able to get up to 9th but lost the jacobs ladder, falling back to 14th.

“We did have a good run at Humboldt and got a solid top-5,” said Covington, “But then we blew a motor the next night at Lakeside passing for the lead in the heat. That ended our night. So with that, on top of the rear-end issue and DNF at TMS, we’ve gotten ourselves into a pretty big hole that’s going to take some solid races to get out of. Years past a lot of the struggles have been brought on by myself or missed setups. But this year, it’s frustrating because it’s things I can’t control. But the good thing is that I have had the car and speed every night, now I just need the luck to go with it.”

Covington and team were pleased to have a decent run at I-30 Saturday night. He started 4th and finished 4th in a tough heat. Unfortunately, that put Matt into one of the two B-mains with an outside, front row starting spot. However, Covington was able to get out front and earn the B-main win and the 19th position for the A Feature. He was able to move forward for most of the feature as the track dried out, gaining 10 spots to acquire a top-10 and 9th place finish at the checkers.

“I was hoping for a top-5 at Little Rock,” stated Matt. “We were running in 6th late in the race when the last caution came out. Before the caution, I was getting held up. So, on that last restart I just tried too hard to make something happen and ended up losing a few spots. It was typical Little Rock, tacky off the turns early and then quickly went away, slicking up. We weren’t the greatest but I definitely felt like we had a top-5 car. But I’m still happy with the results considering the past several races, and I got some points back.”

With the national tour taking a break in the schedule, Covington will take on some regional races this coming weekend. “We were thinking about going to Knoxville this weekend and run the 410, but the weather doesn’t look great so we may end up at Creek and Lawton with the ASCS Red River region.”
