Inside Line Promotions – JACKSON, Minn. (June 6, 2017) – Josh Baughman will have a homecoming this Friday when he kicks off the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Sizzlin’ Summer Speedway at West Texas Raceway.
“It’s going to be a pretty cool weekend being this close to home,” he said. “Starting Speedweek off there is really cool. We’ll have a lot of family and friends there. I cut my teeth racing sprint cars there. I’ve looked forward to going there since the schedule came out.”
Baughman began racing 305ci winged sprint cars at the oval in Lubbock, Texas, where he said he’s won a handful of races.
“I haven’t been there in a few years so I don’t think I have an advantage over the other drivers,” he said. “I’m just excited to race close to home. Hopefully we can start Speedweek with a win.”
Baughman will then venture to Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, on Saturday. He finished fifth at the track during the Speedweek race last year.
The remaining ASCS National Tour Speedweek races next week are June 13 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas; June 14 at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.; June 15 at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.; June 16 at Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo.; and June 17 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.
“I love racing Speedweeks because you get to do so much racing in a short period of time,” he said. “If you’re operating well it’s a blast going to a new track each night.”
Baughman is coming off a disappointing weekend at the 39th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals hosted by Jackson Motorplex. He was hampered by a mechanical problem in his heat race last Thursday during the opening night of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series tripleheader.
Baughman’s best performance was on Friday when he timed in seventh quickest in his group’s qualifying before placing fifth in a heat race to lock into the main event. He advanced from his 17th starting position to just outside the top 10 when another competitor nearly made contact entering turn one. Baughman slid off the track to avoid the crash and was forced to restart at the back of the pack. He rebounded for a 19th-place result.
The event concluded on Saturday when Baughman placed fifth in both a heat race and the Last Chance Showdown to miss locking into the $25,000-to-win main event by only one position both times.
“We struggled all weekend,” he said. “We have to wash this weekend from our minds and start fresh.”
