Third Place At Eagle Raceway Highlights Covington's Weekend
Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (June 3, 2015) Matt Covington had a great run and podium finish on Saturday followed by disappointment on Sunday. The weekend saw Matt picked up a solid 3rd place finish at Eagle Raceway on Saturday night but after a strong run motor issues forced Covington to the pits with a DNF on Sunday at the Belleville Highbanks with the ASCS National Tour.
On Saturday night Matt and the team took on Eagle Raceway in Nebraska.
After a good heat race draw Covington raced to his third heat race win of the season.
The heat win would place Covington in the redraw for the nights A-main. Matt would draw the pole position to start the feature.
With the feature underway Covington would jump out front and lead the early part of the feature. Racing towards the halfway point while entering lap traffic, Covington would surrender the lead and fall back to third as his power steering started to fade. Matt would settle in and focus to race through the lappers with the leaders as the race continued to click away. With the rough race track and loss of power steering, Covington would do all he could to hold on to the third position. With the checkers flags waving, Covington would survive to post a solid 3rd place and back to back National tour top-5s.
Sunday night would have Covington and the crew making the trip to Belleville Highbanks in Kansas.
After a deep pill draw, Matt would find himself lining up in the back of his heat for the night. With a good handling car, Covington went to work fighting hard to advance up to third in his heat.
The 3rd place finish would put Matt in the redraw for the second night in a row. Covington would walk away from the redraw table with the third starting spot for the nights A-main.
At the drop of the green Covington would find himself battling to stay inside the top-5. Running hard and working to showcase another solid effort for the second night in a row, Covington’s luck would run out and sideline him for the night. Matt would find himself covered in hot fluid and having to bring his car to a stop with a wounded power plant. Luckily Matt would escape without any burns or injuries, however the end result would be a DNF and a trip to the trailer for the remainder of the night with engine troubles.
“This past weekend was filled with highs followed by frustration for me,” stated Covington. “On Saturday night we had a great night and came home with a great effort. I wish we could have got the win but Seth and Johnny was just a tad better than us in the ruts along with the steering deal and it just kept us from that little extra we needed. I was hoping for another strong run on Sunday and to be honest we were in position to do so before the motor issue late in the feature. Not 100% sure yet if the motor is ok or not. We for sure know that we knocked the freeze plug out of it during the race and we are still checking it over to see if anything else went wrong. But we are gaining on the car and look to be on the right track. We will keep plugging away and working hard until we hit victory lane. I believe its coming and once we get one I think it will open the door to more!"
